Depression

You are not alone…

It is common for humans to experience sadness and low moods occasionally, but when these feelings last for a long period of time, it can be difficult to cope and go about daily activities. In Australia, one in sixteen Australians suffers from depression every year. It is much more than just feeling sad and can affect a person's social, physical, and financial situation.

Here are some key statistics on depression in Australia

  1. Approximately 1 million Australians experience depression in any given year (.42% of the population)

  2. Approximately 20% of all Australians will experience a depressive episode at some point in their lives.

  3. Depression affects both men and women.

  4. It is estimated that around 1 in 35 young people aged 4-17 experience a major depressive disorder.

  5. Depression is a major risk factor for suicide.

  6. Around 60% of people with mental health conditions, including depression, do not seek or receive adequate support.
